Resumen

Durante el siglo XIX se consolidó el materialismo mecanicista frente a las teorías vitalistas y la Naturephilosophie dentro de los estudios sobre la vida y especialmente en la fisiología. Tres han sido las razones principales que se han dado para explicar este acontecimiento: El positivismo de Auguste Comte, la teoría de la evolución de las especies de Darwin y los adelantos en materia física y química aplicados al mundo biológico. Sin embargo, existe otro elemento de vital importancia y que se considera parte de la última de las tres razones mencionadas: El fenómeno de la institucionalización (la construcción y desarrollo de laboratorios de investigación fisiológica). Este artículo intentará mostrar la importancia de este punto en el destierro de las teorías vitalistas de la investigación fisiológica. Para conseguirlo se tendrá que ahondar en la fundación del Instituto de Leipzig, cuya construcción y diseño corrió a cargo de Carl Ludwig. Este instituto será el modelo que los siguientes laboratorios de investigación médica adoptaron; cuya propagación comenzó a mediados del siglo XIX y continúa hasta nuestros días.

Abstract

During the Nineteenth Century mechanistic materialism superseded vitalist theories and the Naturephilosophie in the studies of life, especially in physiology. There are three main reasons used in the explanation of this event: he Positivism of Auguste Comte, the Species theory of evolution of Darwing and progress in physics and chemistry applied to the biological world. However, there is another important element that is considered part of the last of the three reasons mentioned: The phenomena of institutionalization (the construction and development of laboratories of physiological research). This article will attempt to show the importance of this point in eradicating vitalist theories from physiological research. To achieve this requires exploring the foundation of the Leipzig Institute, which was built and designed by Carl Ludwig. This institute will be the model that subsequent medical research laboratories adopted, as they spread across the mid Nineteenth Century and continues today.
